Ola Electric halted production ? faces ‘inventory pile-up’ ?
Inventory piling up is now hurting Ola Electric & the company suspended production of its electric scooters at its Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu plant for nearly a week .
The company has denied the reason and has taken a stand that the plant was shut for annual maintenance and installation of new machines.
Ola started trial production at the Tamil Nadu plant in October and regular production in December, so it has only been around eight months since production started in earnest. and now the company has about 4,000 scooters piled up at the plant. According to a source, when Ola Electric stopped the line on July 21, when it was producing only 100 units a day as against its current capacity of 600.The company did not clarify its daily production and booking numbers. It did not elaborate on the duration of the suspension but maintained it was brief.
The company claims : Like all other auto companies that go through annual maintenance at their factories, we did too. At no point can this be considered as shutting down production. Hence, clarifying that information is untrue,” an Ola spokesperson has informed a media group.
According to another reliable media report, Ola is in the process of sacking about 1,000 employees across verticals.and here the company takes stand that it is the restructuring exercise , which is expected to last a few more weeks & is aimed at increasing Ola’s focus on its electric mobility business, for which it is hiring aggressively.
On July 15, 2021, Ola Electric Mobility opened bookings for its new Ola Scooter. The company claims to have received over 1 lakh pre-bookings in a matter of 24 hours, making it the most pre-booked scooter in the world.
Ola’s plant is being built at an investment of Rs 2,400 crores. It is the first electric scooter plant in Tamil Nadu. Once complete, it was believed , it will offer job opportunities to 10,000 workers and the fully operational plant will comply with Industry 4.0 norms. According to initial information,the plant will comprise of most precision robotic welding unit, an advanced autonomous paint shop and 100 percent in-house battery manufacturing unit which will see 25,000 motors assembled per day.
